JOBS

D ear Colleagues,

Please see below e-mail from Regional Arts NSW. Could you please let me know if there are any suitable recommendations for this tender within the network?
Dear General Managers, As you know, Regional Arts Australia has been funded to pilot Creative Volunteering in two regional Indigenous communities in 2007. The pilots follow on from the scoping project completed in 2006. I would like to put out an invitation to Tender for a consultant to manage this project (our previous consultant Charles Trindall has indicated he is not available). As with the previous project I would like this to be a limited Tender offer to one or two people from each state/NT. Please feel free to call and talk about this if you have any questions.
I would be very pleased to hear from you with the contact details of anyone you believe would be appropriate for this role. I will need their details by Wednesday June 6.
Tender invitations will go out by Friday June 8th, to be provided to me by Monday June 25th.
In considering appropriate recommendations, can you please keep the following in mind:
Tenders should demonstrate
A strong understanding of the arts and cultural sector in regional and remote Australia
Strong understanding of, empathy for and experience in working with Indigenous people and organisations.
Knowledge and experience in flexible education and training development, methodology and delivery
Experience in community consultation, analysis and reporting.

The following activities are to be undertaken by the consultant.
Pilot Actions
Establish a project reference group which would include representatives from the project partners and other key stakeholder organisations
Create an Indigenous protocols document for working with regional and remote Indigenous communities.
Determine locations of pilots.
Carry out community consultative visits prior to the workshops.
Determine appropriate workshops to be piloted.
Source appropriate Indigenous trainers/interpreters to work alongside existing trainers for the pilots.
Customise case studies and assessment exercises to complement existing workbooks.
Deliver pilot workshops. (via an RTO currently delivering the CVNL program)
Evaluate pilot workshop ( in collaboration with Flinders University)
Hold a national seminar for trainers, on appropriate Indigenous cultural education and community engagement.
Report and recommendations.
Many thanks, I look forward to hearing from you soon, Ruth Smiles Executive Director Regional Arts Australia 2 McLaren Parade Port Adelaide SA 5015 Ph: 08 84440424 Fax: 08 84478496 Mobile: 0421611715 Mailto:ruth.smiles@countryarts.org.au www.regionalarts.com.au

ABOUT ME PAGE

I am Wiradjuri, I come from the Wiradjuri Nation ,My name is David Dunn; My Aboriginal name is Gaagang, which means elder brother. I come from a small town 50 miles west of Dubbo called Trangie (in Aboriginal this means" quick", "intercourse"). I use some of the traditional symbols my father and uncles showed me but I try to use my own style. I was told by an Elder from the Warburton community to paint what you feel not what you see, so I paint from the heart and from the memories of my childhood. Our family's totem is the emu and I have been told I have an extremely strong sense of Spirit and Family.
I started painting as a child with my mum, dad and baby sister. I remember drawing and coloring in with my mother alot.Dad taught me how to hunt ,fish and other male things. I know the tradition was handed down to me then. My parents are still my inspiration to my works.I have eleven children, I paint about them, Kids are important. I get a lot of enjoyment out painting but the fun part is when I see other people’s expressions while they are viewing one of my works. My first exhibition was held at the Boomali art gallery in 1986, where I sold a painting titled "Body And Spirits" The painting sat on an easel for ten minutes and was sold to an American. Since then I have had a few major exhibitions around New South Wales and I've sold a lot of my works to overseas buyers through exhibitions and the Internet. I use some of the traditional symbols my father and uncles showed me but I try to use my own style. I paint from the heart and from the memories of my childhood, Through my works I am able to tell people about our culture, life, love, the good times and the bad times. I feel that people can understand the painting and that they can actually relate to the painting and that they feel drawn to it. Throughout these works stories are told and often visualized by the onlooker's eye as a young man's struggle through life. Silhouettes are used throughout my paintings as the main three colours are of the Koorie (Aboriginal) flag, Red, Yellow and Black. Sometimes white dotted flares are used to highlight a hole in the present, me wanting to go back in time to the "Dreamtime", back to the beginning of creation. The dots represent a lot of different things, but mainly the colours of the natural vegetation around my birth place. ©daviddunncomau

" MEETING PLACE "

" MEETING PLACE "
Acrylic on Canvas, unframed

16.5cm, 165mm, 6.1/2in x 11cm, 110mm 4.1/4in
2007

This painting depicts the meeting place of Women. I remember growing up my mum and aunties would go and pick our grandmothers up and go out in the bush, mum would say that they were going for a yarn. That’s all I no, I now no that if a man went anywhere near there meeting places they would be speared in the leg. The three circles joined by squiggly lines represent my signature and the three rivers of the "Wiradjuri Nation", The Wambool (Macquarie),Kalar (Lachlan) and Murrumbidgerie (Murrumbidgee) The Wiradjuri tribe is also known by the name of "the River people" as we all lived along the banks of the Rivers which stretches across NSW. The Wiradjuri lands stretch from Nyngan to Albury and from Hay to Bathurst - the largest territory in New South Wales. Our country extends across 80,00 square kilometres across areas known as the South West slopes, Central and Southern table lands, Capital Country and the Riverina.©

VOTE YES

VOTE YES for Aborigines is a documentary about the 1967 Referendum and the fight for citizenship rights for Aborigines. It marks the 40th anniversary of the occasion, celebrating its historical significance and
contemporary relevance. It is a documentary film by Frances Peters-Little.

VOTE YES for Aborigines goes to air on SBS TV, Sunday, the 27th May, at 8.30pm.

While many people believe that the 1967 Referendum gave Aborigines the right to vote, in fact the Referendum removed two sections of the constitution that discriminated against Aborigines. With the highest YES vote in Australia's history, 90.77% of voters agreed that Aborigines be counted in the census and that the Commonwealth Government take charge
of Aboriginal affairs, effectively acknowledging Aboriginal people as citizens within their own country.

Aborigines had fought for citizenship rights for over a century but it was the coming together of the many Aboriginal associations and leagues in 1958 to form a national body that finally gave impetus to the struggle. The Federal Council for the Advancement of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders or FCAATSI attracted both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal membership and support from across all sections of Australian society.

For ten years they campaigned to convince the public and politicians of the need for Constitutional change. They capitalised on the global condemnation of Australia's treatment of its indigenous people and the media's growing interest in Aboriginal issues. The "Freedom Rides" of 1965 and the Gurindji strike at Wave Hill in 1966 highlighted Aboriginal living and working conditions and helped advance the crusade to set things right for indigenous Australians.

VOTE YES for Aborigines revisits those involved with the 1967 referendum and the social attitudes and influences that led to the event, featuring former Prime Ministers, politicians, historians and campaigners.

More than just marking a time in history, VOTE YES for Aborigines interrogates the success of the Referendum and addresses current debates about what is meant by Australian citizenship and values and how they relate, if at all to Aboriginal history, identity, and culture.

restorative justice workshop

What is Restorative Justice?
Restorative justice involves the use of conferences. Conferencing is a victim-sensitive approach to addressing wrongdoing in various settings in a variety of ways.
Restorative justice can be used in the home, school or workplace, or in any situation in which there is tension and conflict in relationships in addition to its use in dealing with criminal acts.
A conference is a structured meeting between offenders, victims and both parties' family and friends in which they deal with the consequences of the crime and decide how best to repair the harm. Neither a counselling nor a mediation process, conferencing is a straightforward problem-solving method that demonstrates how citizens can resolve their own problems when provided with a constructive forum to do so.

Ngudjuwa Ngurang Workshop
Purpose of this workshop
Develop understanding of a language centre.
What are the protocols and procedures of learning language off country.
How to get the community involvement with the language centre.
And what are the funding availabilities
Ngudjuwa Ngurang Workshop
Language Learning Centre
The language centre will have a unique position of being driven by and directly answerable to the community for which they do their work. The work of the language centre is determined by decisions of its committee. The committee is comprised of representatives of language groups in the region after consultation with Traditional Owner groups.
The Centre would have the capacity to provide the avenue for community to learn language off country.
This would be possible once a protocol agreement is negotiated with the local Traditional Owners.

On behalf of Nyanda Ngudjuwa and the
WayWurru and Dhudhuroa Language Program I would like to thank you for your input and ideas for this workshop.

" SPIRITS OF THE WATER "
Acrylic on Canvas, unframed

21cm, 210mm, 8in x 255mm, 25.5cm, 10in
2007

MEANING; This painting depicts the Spirits of the Water, they are the spirits that make the water sparkle and clean as they look after the water. Back in creation time Baiame created all and placed certain Spirits in every thing and place. He gave Laws to these spirits and each spirit certain powers to make the aboriginal people obey his laws. The water spirits were left in places where people and animals came to drink. They were given the power to bring on new life, Storms, Floods and even droughts depending on how the people obeyed Baiame laws. They were given certain animal totems to feed the people such as fish, turtle and every other creature that lives in water. He made it Law that he who drinks water takes the water Spirit that gives new life. The Water spirits create rain and new life. Without the water spirits all would die.. My Spirits are protectors. The three circles joined by squiggly lines represent the three rivers of the "Wiradjuri Nation", The Wambool (Macquarie), Kalar (Lachlan) and Murrumbidgerie (Murrumbidgee). ©

REVIEW OF MY PAINTING; Well known among the Aboriginal artists for his clarity of style and vivid use of colour. David is a talented artist whose works have toured Australia. Several art collectors overseas commissioning David to paint larger paintings for there own collections. These painting are filled with a true artist's' impression of the Australian outback. It is difficult to believe that this art can be created using a brush alone but it has and this is a testament to the skills of David Dunn. David's paintings usually combine traditional Aboriginal dot painting techniques and modern contemporary Aboriginal art. Each of his paintings has a meaning that goes beyond what is depicted, for instance in a painting the color of the dots signify a part of the natural landscape and also have a reference to the dreamtime. Interested collectors may wish to peruse the stories attached to other paintings that David has done in order to gain further insight here. In Adelaide, in South Australia, these paintings have been creating a sensation with many keen buyers asking for private viewings and snapping up the art.
